TAP-IN Workshops

A menu of the day's offerings:

Inclusion Solutions
What is inclusion? How are TAs impacted by inclusion classes? What strategies are helpful and effective for maintaining classroom management? How will we meet the diverse, individual needs of both students and teachers in inclusion classes? These questions will be addressed, and we will apply group brainstorming techniques to help us come up with some practical solutions for a variety of art forms.

Get SMART: Using the SMART Board in the Classroom
More and more schools are getting on board with the SMART Board. If you are working in classrooms where SMART Boards are available, what does this mean for you?
  • What is a SMART Board? What does it do? Why should I care?
  • What questions do I need to ask about my school's SMART Boards and computers?
  • How can I incorporate the SMART Board into my arts residency?
The answers to these questions will be revealed in this interactive, technology-based workshop.

Goals as Artists, Goals as Teachers: DREAMSPACE
Often teaching artists can feel overwhelmed with achieving a balance between their artistic projects and their roles as educators. For many of us, this struggle for balance has been especially exacerbated by the present economic climate. It can get stifling... and discouraging. Which is why we must not forget to dream about what could be possible; we are our own tools of innovation, both in art and in education, and where those two worlds meet. This workshop offers teaching artists a space to reflect on their own artistic goals and needs, as well as the goals and needs of the communities in which they teach, in order to brainstorm exciting new project possibilities.

Positive Classroom Management
What goes into a well-managed classroom? What kind of classroom environment do we want to establish and maintain? In this interactive session, we will explore strategies and tools for student engagement, the foundation of a well-managed classroom. We will discuss handling challenges in the classroom, as well as proactive measures we can take in advance to help minimize challenges.

Special Education Boot Camp
Learn the basics of how special education works in the DOE, and strategies for teaching students with special needs. In this workshop, you will learn the priorities of the special education curriculum and how to use the arts to further these goals. You will learn games and exercises designed to increase communication and socialization skills, that can be adapted to all ability levels. You will walk away from this workshop with the fundamentals you need to work with special education students.

Curriculum Integration
How can we use the arts to support student learning and development in other subject areas? How can we help classroom teachers see teaching artists (and their respective art forms) as resources for impacting student learning across the curriculum? In this interactive session, we will explore strategies and tools for collaborating with classroom teachers to integrate your art form(s) into their classroom curricula. We will discuss and practice planning tools, as well as strategies for ensuring a strong partnership.
